An IRS Tax Processing Number for Non-U.S. Persons

Form W-7 application for an ITIN

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the IRS for individuals who are required to file a U.S. federal tax return but are not eligible for a Social Security Number.

If you need to file a U.S. tax return — whether as a non-resident with U.S. source income, a spouse filing jointly, or a foreign individual with a U.S. reporting obligation — an ITIN is your starting point. The application requires Form W-7 and supporting documentation, and the process can become complex. That’s where we come in.

8 Things to Know About ITINs

  • ITINs are typically required for U.S. federal tax reporting purposes only.

  • Having an ITIN lets you file taxes and claim dependents you support in the United States, Canada, or Mexico.

  • Regardless of your immigration status in the United States, you can be issued an ITIN. Some people who have never entered the U.S. may also require one.

  • Having an ITIN does not authorize you to work in the United States.

  • ITINs do not provide eligibility for Social Security Benefits or the Earned Income Tax Credit.

  • To receive an ITIN, foreign individuals must have an IRS filing or reporting requirement — typically, a valid U.S. federal income tax return.

  • If you qualify, an ITIN allows you to obtain a refund of taxes withheld in the United States, provided you file a U.S. tax return.

  • An ITIN may be required to open a U.S. bank account or apply for a loan in the United States.

Does Your ITIN Need to Be Renewed?

Under the PATH Act, ITINs that have not been used on a U.S. federal tax return at least once in the last three consecutive tax years have expired. You must also renew if your ITIN was issued before 2013 with certain middle digits (70–88, 90–99).

With limited exceptions, you are generally not required to attach a tax return to Form W‑7 when renewing. We can handle the entire renewal process for you — the service is included in both our In-Person and Video appointment options.

All ITINs not used on a federal tax return at least once in the last three years (tax years 2022, 2023,
and 2024) expired on December 31, 2025
